Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is a Classic Romantic British Film, an adaption of the novel of Jane Austen during the 19th Century in England. The story was about the Bennet Family having 5 lovely daughters (you can see the picture above) who is oblige to marry a man who is rich or who owns a lot of money that will secure their lives in the future. The setting of the story shows you what is really like in the 19th Century because of the set design, location and even the costumes of the characters. In the story, it will show you that even before the way of living and the beliefs that they have still exist until now. People on that time were influence on how they see life, like how they see marriage. The wealth of a person is more important than love, the description of their love is how wealthy a man is like how vain, classy and influential that person is.

Little Miss Sunshine

"You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them."
- Desmond Tutu

In the Philippines, one of the important things in our life is our family. We have this saying that Blood is thicker than Water that is why sometimes we tend in being bias when it comes to our family.

Family is a group of people related to each other but let me correct that. Sometimes we thought that what we call family is really our family but then we are wrong. Why did I say that? Many of us see the family to others or experience having the family in an outer shell of our home. People tend to seek attention to other people because they cannot claim or gain that from their own family. The reasons are like being busy with their work, priorities in life, they don't care, members of the family don't know how to listen each other that creates another problem.

But because we care too much to our family sometimes we forget ourselves and we didn't even realize that we are doing the bad things because we only think about the sake of our family. Family first than others, they say.

Every family has their own problems and they have solution in every problem that they face everyday. How to make a family strong when it comes in facing small to big problems? Simply, trust, love and respect  because if you love your family it is so easy to face those problems no matter how small or big it is if you know that someone loves you and willing to catch you from falling. Trust is very important in each person because if we don't have trust we cannot do things perfectly because we keep on thinking bad things to them and will create more problems. And respect, we all know that respect is very important to us also. We can gain respect if people will know that there is something inside of us. Because of respect, it somehow gives you the freedom to show everyone that you have something inside that you keep on hiding but you just can't show to them, afraid of being misunderstood by someone.

And in this movie, we can learn more about family and What should family is. Little Miss Sunshine will give you the idea on how we can appreciate life with our family and how we can change because of our family.

But before we tackle about this film, I will let you watch the trailer so that you will have an idea about it and we can share our thoughts after. (Disclaimer: I don't own this video.)

The cast of Little Miss Sunshine: Facing Left to Right

Alan Arkin - Grandpa Edwin Hoover
Steve Carell - Frank Ginsburg
Paul Dano - Dwayne Hoover
Abigail Breslin - Olive Hoover
Toni Collette - Sheryl Hoover
Greg Kinnear - Richard Hoover

Directed by: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris

Let's talk about Little Miss Sunshine, this is a typical kind of family movie wherein the members of the family has the different attitude to handle. The story revolves to a cute chubby child name Olive, she is the main character of the story.

It starts from a dream of a child becoming the Little Miss Sunshine. Olive is the regional winner of Little Miss Sunshine in their place because of that she got the chance to compete to other candidates who also won in their region. And this is the start of their adventure when his father decided to go to California and will take the crown and the title Little Miss Sunshine.

In their family, they have different kinds of attitude, personality and stories to share. First, the older brother of Olive, Dwayne, he totally knocks out all the people and never talk to anyone even his family. His way of communication is writing on a paper as if he is mute. Second, the father of Olive, Mr. Richard, the perfectionist and the fighter who keeps on asking "Are you a winner or loser?". Third, the mother of Olive, Mrs. Sheryl the peacemaker of the family and lastly, the old of the family, Grandpa. He is the cool guy of the family, the happy -  go - lucky guy who really takes good care of Olive the one who cheer up the child. Even though he is doing or acting silly things and we say malicious things he never fails being the grandpa of Olive.

Along their journey, they were able to solve the issues in their family and was able to correct the things and create a new one. Even though Grandpa saw dead in the morning life must go on because in the beginning their goal is to get that title and bring it home. But life is life and we have to go forward and accept things whether we like it or not.

In the movie I can really say that the Mise - en -scene applied naturally, excellent. The set design was great and you can really appreciate it every scene in the movie. Set designing is very important in the movie because it can affect the movie, you should really put in mind that it is related to the scene or it can give beauty or meaning. The characters in the movie fits to them, they really portray what should be the character is. The acting is not over reacted perfect and so funny. The make up and the costumes fits to their personalities with no ifs and buts.

I really appreciate the movie a lot not because it tackles the word family, but because the content itself or the story. The cast also did their job, a well acted, written and directed movie.

Thumbs up!

Here are some photos in the movie:

In this scene, they are talking about going to California for Little Miss Sunshine Pageant.

Clear the area because the Hoover family is coming!!!

The adventure to California starts, Little Miss Sunshine we are on our way.

This scene was so funny, Olive was showing her talent and all the people are having a hard time in appreciating the talent. But still her family stand and show their support for their big girl that she can do it even though people don't like it anymore.

Minsan Lang Sila Bata

The greatest gifts you can give to your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.
- Denis Waitley

From that quote, if you will base it to whats happening in our society you will really think that yeah it is right. Children now is expose too much in responsibility and independence. Responsibility, because in that early age children is already working to feed their own family knowing that they still have their parents. But because of poverty and they are many in the family parents cannot afford all of them and choose to let them work and help the family. Independence, because they already have work and they can afford themselves without the help of their parents.

So sad but this is really the reality, Reality Check 101.

Nowadays, child labor is normal for us because we even experience that it may not the same to what other children do but we can relate to it. When I say normal, is it really normal that children force to work than to play knowing that they are still a child.

We should never say that it is normal because if we are used to it we can no longer see the bad side to it and as if we will accept the fact that we have nothing to do to stop it and change it.

In our generation, many people are still unconscious of child labor happening in their society even though it's in their own neighborhood. Why? People really don't care so much to other people like what will happen to them afterwards, the H*LL they care?

No matter how we say it, it is already the nature of a person not to care especially if they don't know the person or they cannot get benefits to that person. And the bad thing is that, instead we help them we are the ones pushing them.

Here is the full documentary of Minsan Lang Sila Bata, please do watch. (Disclaimer: I do not own this video. Courtesy: You tube)

Components of a Character: SEE THE TRUTH !!

The documentary shows and proves that child labor exist long long time ago as we expected. There were three different places being presented with different stories to share. First was in Cebu, children were working at the slaughter house for pigs and their salary was the fat of the pigs. Second was in Ormoc, the farmer children they were working at the sugar cane hacienda. Lastly, the Cement boy, they were the ones who carry a sack of cement.

These children are already working in at early age and paid in low amount. They are being abused by people who didn't even care about their future and health. Some of them are not in good conditions but still they chose to work for just a little amount of money.

Parents send them to work for them to help the family, not to school for them to learn and have a brighter future.

Most of them were able to go to school but they stop because of financial problems and
sometimes force to absent for them to help look for money.

It was helpful for us people to know human interest by the help with this kind of film. The documentary was good in terms of content. The technicalities, I won't dwell to that because I know that they don't have the gadget of techonology to make it better. But still they were able to produce a good documentary that tackles issues that us people blind to the truth.!

West Side Story

West Side Story is a musical movie sets in the West side of New York City in 1950's. There are two teenage gangs namely Jets and Sharks claiming the place as theirs.

Knowing that this is a musical movie, the choreography and the song being used and performed was totally good. If we will talk about the set designing I can really say that they really did a great job knowing that their time compare to our time is totally different. In their time the type of production that they can produce is lesser than we think because of the development of technologies that they have. But at least they were able to produce such thing, we didn't even realize that most scenes were taken from a studio.

The movie talks about Love like Romeo and Juliet because the same as their story, Maria and Tony's love for each other is against all odds. But the other thing is that, its not all about Love it is also about Racial Discrimination against two different worlds who compact in one place.

I love music a lot that is why I really appreciate this movie, the dancing also was great because of the extension of the feet and arms that make them so wonderful to watch and you can really jive to it and have some eagerness to join them. The facial expression also really matters knowing that this is also a play of emotions.

Here is the opening scene of West Side Story, I hope you will enjoy and appreciate the art. (Disclaimer: I don't own this video)

Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros

(The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros)

Before we talk about this film, watch the trailer first so that you will have an idea or a clue about the said film. Enjoy :)

Directed By:
Auraeus Solito

Written By:
Michiko Yamamoto

So here’s the thing, when I was still a child I saw the trailer of this film and even though I knew to myself that I can’t watch it because of the theme itself I still have the eagerness that maybe someday I can watch it. When we had our film showing in our class I was surprise because the title of the movie that we will criticize was Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, I was so happy that time at last the time has come for me to view the movie that I've been waiting for the past years.

Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is an award - winning independent film showed last 2005. The movie was about the life of a gay teenager who is torn between love to his family and love of his life. They have a simple life and live at a slum area in Manila, together with his loving father and loving two brothers.

Maxi's family was known in their society because of their illegal way of living and when the love of his life came in, which is the police officer, all things change.

This also talks about the imperfections of the members in the family wherein you have to choice whether you will accept them who they are or you will reject them.

In the film it shows representation of gender and the diegesis. Gender because it is too obvious that the main character was a teen gay who feels in love with a police officer in their place.

So in the movie of Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliverosdiegesis is present. Diegesis is a narrated or a part of the film which is no longer incorporated because it’s already understood.

One of the scenes in the movie was when the father of Maxi killed in the dark corner of the street, it is not shown in the movie how the Chief Officer killed the father of Maxi but we already understood that his been killed that night.

It is used because sometimes we don't have to show all the things all the time. This can help our imagination move and active to all the things we see and understand.

The setting of the movie was great because they show what it is should like the house they have, the neighborhood and the totality of the place which is "skwater".

The wardrobe itself is so simple, it really shows how people wear their own style and the way of their living.

In totality of the movie, it was good we will no longer tackle about technicalities knowing that this is an independent film. But the main point here is that they were able to portray the story, maybe there are some questions but maybe it is the directors call why he/she did that.

So I won't take you so long, I have a full movie of this film and all you have to do is to watch and to comment of what you can say about the film.  (Disclaimer: I don't own this video I got this from YouTube and share for you guys to enjoy.)
